Phantom of the Rue Morgue

A top notch horror thriller for it's time when it was released in the 1950s.....not a slasher film, those types of movies were not even considered during that time period....story concerns some very brutal murders of beautiful young women in and around some Paris France nightclubs in the very early 1900s....women are mutilated and the local gendarmes (police) are mystified....how could they be so badly beat up and decimated....the local police question everyone and the local inspector pays too much attention looking for suspects at the local college.....no clues are to be found.... finally after another gruesome murder a local student is implicated since he was near the area looking for the murderer himself...the local cops are very anxious to pin the murder on the student since they have no other suspects and the heat is on to find the killer (s). After some serious head scratching the student, Steve Forrest puts two and two together and figures that no man could be physically capable of crashing through glass ceilings and mutilating and stuffing corpses up a chimney and severing limbs....the evidence points to an animal such as a gorilla...naturally the local gendarmes do not believe it a first. After the gorilla escapes from his local pen at the zoo and murders again, police have to release Forrest from custody. Evidence points to the local zoo and its curator Professor Marais (Karl Malden) Police quickly rush to the zoo to find the ape carrying around another potential victim, the fiancé of Forrest. The cops kill the gorilla and in a somewhat funny scene the ape lands on Malden and gives him a Mike Tyson working over...ugh!! This film was released in 3D in 1954 during a period when Hollywood was trying to figure out how to keep its audiences away from television.....3D was a silly gimmick that gave a few thrills by wearing plastic glasses to enlarge and somewhat make more believable the image on the screen...it looked like the image was coming right at the viewer more explicitly than in regular format. All in all this is a good, decent horror thriller for it's time...the music composed by David Buttolph is pretty good and adds a touch to the mystery. The guy in the gorilla costume is very believable and you feel almost compassionate seeing the gorilla in his cage responding to affection from the fiancé of Forrest. Decent little thriller.

Nearly Perfect Depiction Of The McCullers' Classic

It's usually helpful to place things in context. Carson McCullers was born in 1917 in Columbus, Georgia, and left home during the Great Depression in 1934 at age 17 to study piano in New York, but instead was drawn into writing by several New York women university writers. This career choice soon proved fortuitous. Already famous with her "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", McCullers wrote "The Member Of The Wedding" over five years while her nation was fully engaged with the colossally deadly Second World War in both Europe and Asia. The book was published shortly after the war in 1946 when the gifted writer was 29 and living well in post-war Paris, then being reconstructed with the help of the American Marshall Plan. ("Member" is thus a little reminiscent of "Little Women", oblivious as it was of the massively deadly Civil War in the back yard.)

"The Member Of The Wedding", like most of her best work, draws very heavily on McCullers' own childhood experiences in the poverty-ridden American Depression-era South. While the film moves the time period slightly forward, the story is about the mixed and tumultuous emotions of a self-involved young 12-year old girl ("tomboy") faced with the marriage of her older brother, a soldier. The daughter of a hard-working widowed father, she uses a black maid as her sounding board.

The book's universal appeal derives from the fact that the story is concerned with an adolescent experiencing the normal difficulty of growing up and struggling to become aware of one's self -- always a major problem for pubescent children of both genders. Since the central character here is a girl (Frankie), some critics have emphasized the importance of the sexual identity theme. In the book, Frankie, for example, wishes people could 'change back and forth from boys to girls', while her younger cousin, John Henry, wants them to be 'half boy and half girl'. The play and film reduces all this conflict to little more than mention of a cat that answers to either "Charlie" or "Charlene". This is a shame, since this psycho-social sexual identity theme has been aggressively pursued by American women over the past quarter of a century, including in public schools and education research, mainly by superimposing such a view on boys in a very wide-ranging campaign to re-engineer American males.

The racial theme is secondary in "Wedding" inasmuch as it simply reflects everyday reality in the South when McCullers (Frankie) was a young girl - almost a century ago. This movie is much more noteworthy because of the great American actresses Ethel Waters and Julie Harris (and supporting actor James Edwards), who could always be counted on for perfect performances -- including while performing on LIVE national TV broadcasts of great classics during the 1950s' "Golden Age Of Television". (It is indeed unfortunate that few of those great live TV performances, based on works by Williams, Faulkner, O. Henry, Chekov, Ibsen, etc., were preserved on permanent media. All I have now are wonderful memories of fascinating experiences that introduced me to the world of classic literature as a young teen - in my living room.)

For a much better examination of the racial theme in the American South, see "To Kill A Mockingbird", also written by a young American women writer (Harper Lee) who drew heavily on her own childhood ("tomboy") experiences during the Depression-era and pre-war South (Alabama). Many, myself included, regard her book's central character, Atticus Finch, as America's best fictional male hero. In stark contrast to today's popular view of fathers, Lee used her own widowed dad to help craft an outstanding and ageless role model, a man of true substance.

McCullers' widowed father, on the other hand, also struggling to earn a living while raising children with the help of a black maid, becomes mostly absent to her Frankie – an apparently insensitive man of no consequence. Carson McCullers married the same ex-soldier twice; he eventually committed suicide in Paris. McCullers herself suffered with alcoholism and strokes that left her left side paralyzed by age 31. She died in New York at age 50.

Interestingly, both McCullers and Lee became close friends of Truman Capote. These were two American women contemporaries - McCullers and Lee - from very similar background circumstances, who each produced great works of semi-autobiographical fiction -- of a completely different nature. Harper Lee, who never married, was awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom at the age of 81 in 2007, some say largely because of the solid character she created, not in herself, but in her dad, Atticus Finch – the Last True American Hero.

Review :

French filmmaking used to be much, much better

The comparison, here, is unavoidable. This is the first version, dated 1954, with a fine cast led by Jeanne Moreau in her very beginnings, a competent mise-en-scène (Jean Dréville), a fine score (as usual) by Paul Misraki, a fine Eastmancolor photography by Henri Alekan and, last but not least, a script by silent-screen pioneer, Abel Gance, the celebrated author of Napoléon. Now, what could we say of the so-called remake 40 years later? Hardly anything to do with Dumas Père or, for that matter, good cinema. most surely the writer would be as horrified as I was with such self-boosting display of an ego trip by Monsieur Chéreau, a kind of sub-Peter Brook theatrical régisseur in France. Nota Bene that the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre was NOT re-enacted in this Gance/Dréville version, which definitely turns it into a more subtle, although MUCH more sarcastic, even cruder picture than its ill-timed successor.

Still worth watching today

Unlike some other German movies of the 1950s, this one is still worth watching. It is a true adaptation of Erich Kästner's children's' novel of the same name. The author did not only write the screenplay himself , but also appears in the first and last scene and provides the narrator's voice in several scenes. With a cast of prominent German actors of the time, notably Paul Dahlke and Paul Klinger, and budding rock'n'roll star Peter Kraus in his first movie role, the movie tells the story of the "Tertia" students (7th/8th grade) in a small town boarding school, who continue a "prehistoric" feud with the boys from a neighbouring school. Woven into this narrative are questions of honesty, courage, loyalty, friendship - and money issues, which never lack in Kästner's books. The boys also write and perform a play about the lessons with their favourite teacher, Johannes Böck called Justus (the just one) and moreover manage to bring him back together with a long-lost childhood friend. I was astonished to see the very good acting of the child actors, among them now famous German director Michael Verhoeven. Even though it's sometimes obvious that painted scenery is used and the editing is somewhat less varied than what we're used to these days, the movie never seems dated in a way that makes it an effort to watch - quite the contrary!

The End of Van Johnsons smooth talk

I noticed in this film Van Johnson's voice has started to obtain gravel. Previously he just had a kind of whiny snide voice (Best example of this is in the 1948? 49? film "Battleground") I will always love Deborah Kerr, from my POV she can never do any wrong. It is all the better when she was handed a good script and a good director.

I would classify this as one of the better scripts. This film is almost like a comedy of errors, instead it is a tragedy of errors. Actually it is quite a sad movie, I would have to read the original book that this was based upon.

What attracted me to this film, are the spiritual aspects. If this film were to be remade today, and I see it was remade in 1999, I wonder how much of the spirituality would remain? I have yet to see the newer version. This film is a quest into the reason behind Faith. I can't explain it, but this film makes a lot of sense. Mrs Miles questions to the priest, to the atheist, and to God are all valid.

Most people will see this film and will only consider the "affair" between Johnson's character and Kerr's... But that is not what this film is about at all: The affair is just a device author Graham Greene used to tell a story about Faith: What it means to have, and what is expected of us who have it.

Of course this film has its melodramatic aspects. Also it has Peter Cushing, who is not chasing vampire Christopher Lee for once.

The only weak things in this film are the confrontations between Van Johnson and Cushing- If I were Cushing and I had a wife that looked like Kerr I would have punched Johnson in the nose. But maybe the weakness of the encounters were to display that Cushing really did not care about his wife, being more interested in becoming a Lord or some important personage.

A railroad worker falls for a married woman

Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, and Broderick Crawford deal with "Human Desire" a 1954 film directed by Fritz Lang and based on Emile Zola's "La Bete Humaine." Fresh from Korea, Jeff Warren (Ford) is a railroad engineer currently staying with his friend (Edgar Buchanan) and his family, one of whom is a young woman interested in Jeff. And no wonder

  • remember, this is Glenn Ford. One of the railroad bosses, Carl

Buckley (Crawford) loses his job in a fit of temper and asks his wife Vicki (Grahame) to appeal to a wealthy and powerful family friend to help him get his job back. Well, she does, but when she returns successful many hours later and wants to hit the shower, it doesn't take much to figure out just how she accomplished this feat. Blind with anger, Buckley makes her write a letter saying she will meet the man in his train compartment. Buckley kills him there and keeps the letter to hold over Vicki.

As she was seen near the murder compartment, Vicki flirts with Ford to keep her out of the investigation and eventually they become involved. That's when Vicki starts hinting around that she needs the letter found and her husband dead - not necessarily in that order.

Not being familiar with the source material, I can't comment on this film as well as some others here. The postwar era was not Lang's strongest; he seems to have fallen out of favor and not getting the budgets or the scripts he once did. That being said, this is a very absorbing noir with Gloria Grahame being completely hateful and Ford being Mr. Nice Guy who is in this woman's clutches. Crawford's character is an odd one; he's presented as a good guy and then suddenly he goes off and becomes a total madman.

What makes this film is the sexual tension between Ford and Grahame. Ford was a wonderful movie star but with a limited range. What he had going for him beside good looks was major sex appeal, and while Grahame burns, he smolders. They make a hot team.

Perhaps the story and characters could have been fleshed out more; as it is, it's entertaining with good directing, acting, and some interesting shots. Great for noir fans.

Enjoyable little actioner

"Yankee Buccaneer" is a variation on the demented Arabian Nights fetish that Universal Pictures seemed to have in the late '40s and early '50s, the difference being that this one doesn't take place in the days of Ali Baba. It's the 1840s, and a U.S. Navy ship is ordered to disguise itself as a merchant vessel and sail to the waters off North Africa to put a stop to pirates preying on American ships. The action scenes are handled well, Jeff Chandler fits the part of the dashing American naval officer, the women are fetching, the cast is full of familiar faces (including Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto in the "Lone Ranger" series), the story doesn't venture past the realm of possibility and it moves along at a good clip. All in all, a neat little B picture--not the best of the lot, but far from the worst.

Review :

Landmark film that changed Brazilian cinema is still thrilling and alive

Rio de Janeiro, a Sunday in the summer of 1954. As the blazing heat reaches 40ºC (hence the title), the camera follows a number of characters who at some point interact, even for a brief moment. Thus we meet five young boys from a slum (favela) who sell peanuts at tourist spots (Copacabana beach, the Sugar Loaf, the statue of Christ atop Corcovado Hill, the Maracanã soccer stadium, the Zoo); a "malandro" (swindler) from the same favela who learns that the girl he's trying to seduce is getting engaged to another man; a working-class girl who fears her slippery military boyfriend will turn her away when she tells him she's pregnant with his child; a rich, crass, hick landowner who comes to Rio only to learn that the language of corrupt politicians and businessmen is universal; a mature soccer idol who realizes his career is over when he gets replaced by a young player in a decisive match...

Inspired by the principles of Italian Neo-Realism -- depicting everyday problems of "real" people; outdoor shooting; mixing professional and non-professional actors; refusing "beautiful" shots etc -- "Rio 40 Graus" has its own grammar and qualities. The multiple characters and parallel stories rivals Rossellini (and precedes Altman, for that matter) and, though very ambitious, is quite accomplished. The editing is remarkable, with an electric pace that demands an intelligent, quick-minded audience and perfectly translates the hectic rhythm of a big city like Rio. It's also shockingly frank in its depiction of poverty, prejudice (social, sexual and racial), corruption, never before shown quite like that in Brazilian cinema.

Being the oeuvre of a self-declared leftist, it shows no mercy towards the bourgeoisie (grand and petty), the powerful and the rich. But it's not a pamphlet by a bitter angry man; it has rigor but it also has humor, poetry, musicality (making the great song by Zé Keti "A Voz do Morro" the film's leitmotiv) and, above all, the love for Rio — which, by the way, is called in the opening credits the real "star" of the film. The film sometimes yields into sentimentality (as many Neo-Realist films did, by the way) but the depiction of the fight between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie has strong political roots and meaning.

"Rio 40 Graus" was the feature debut of director Nelson Pereira dos Santos, then a 26 year-old assistant director from São Paulo, who had been living in Rio for a short time. After the critical triumph of "Rio 40 Graus" he pursued a long and important career, directing great films like "Boca de Ouro" (1962), "Como Era Gostoso Meu Francês" (1971) and "Memórias do Cárcere" (1983) and above all the extraordinary "Vidas Secas" (1963). He also produced many important features and documentaries, was instrumental to the debut of other seminal filmmakers (Glauber Rocha, Roberto Santos, Ruy Guerra etc), was the great inspirer of the Cinema Novo (New Cinema) movement, and is still active in his late 70s.

"Rio40ºC" is unanimously considered the single most important Brazilian film of the 1950s, one that forever changed Brazilian cinema. In a time when film production in Brazil was dreamily striving to become an "industry" controlled by big or medium-sized studios (especially Vera Cruz in São Paulo and Atlântida in Rio) with international majors (Columbia, Fox, WB, etc) getting the biggest share of profits at the distribution end, NPS had the vision and the courage to produce his first feature independently, using a cooperative system -- 59 friends shared the cost (and later the profits) along with the 76 people who worked in the film for free (or peanuts). He borrowed a defective old camera from the INC (National Institute of Cinema, now defunct), and had it fixed by DP Hélio Silva. The principal crew (15 people) lived in a two-room apartment during the shooting. How's that for idealism and commitment!

Tha main shooting was finished by mid-1954, and in September 1955 the film was ready to open, but its public exhibition was vetoed by Rio's State Department on the account that it showed an "ugly" image of the city, even alleging that in Rio the thermometers never reached 40ºC!! (of course they do, and beyond). It was the FIRST Brazilian film censored in its ENTIRETY. The censorship generated a huge counter-attack by the press, intellectuals and artists. All the fuss eventually helped its promotion and it finally opened in March 1956 in a good number of theaters all over the country. Although not exactly a box-office hit, it was hailed by most critics and, above all, it proved to young aspiring Brazilian filmmakers that independent movie-making in Brazil was feasible, thus paving the way to the Cinema Novo movement that revolutionized Brazilian movies in the 1960s.

"Rio 40ºC" is a rare case of a historically important film still being genuinely enjoyable and riveting, dated only in its schematic "good vs evil = black vs white = proletariat vs bourgeois" treatment (and the occasional artificiality of some of the kids' dubbed voices). It's mandatory for all interested in Third World/socially concerned cinema, and thrilling for anyone who likes movies with something more than mindless entertainment and special effects. It's the very first of a lineage of great Brazilian movies about social issues involving abandoned childhood and the favelas, that would later include classics like "Cinco Vezes Favela" (omnibus film, 1962), Sucksdorff's "My Home is Copacabana" (1965), Babenco's "Pixote" (1980) and, of course, Meirelles' "City of God" (2002), which was definitely influenced by "Rio 40ºC" in the multi-character, episodic approach. "Rio 40ºC" is "City of God"'s still exciting, blood-throbbing and heart-pounding granddad.

Both of them, once they arrive, go to the bull fights,in south America?, and Robby notices Arabella played by Zara, the Governor, played by Paul Hartman,is also at the bull fights, notices her and him beginning to talk to each other as Robby gets his watch stuck on Arabella's shawl. He has him investigated later on.Robby discovers later on that she a owner of a night club so he decides to visit the night club to see her ,right at the time he and his assistance have to report an uprising. So when he enter's the club she singing a song,a women of my age, I think that'the title. It's very tuneful. Well after the show he goes to see her in the back entrance of the club, she's now typing some business. She rejects him and billy shows up to let him know what they have to report. When they go to the uprising, between what looks like union workers and the police they spy on it from the roof top of a building. Once billy flashes his camera the police and workers notice they catch them both. A fight starts. Robby runs off while the other one is captured.Robby accidentally kills one of the workers trying to stop him from leaving. He goes back to Zaras night club with a head injury. She rescues him. Leaving a note behind in her room her servant notices it and later on send it to the Governor. Well from her servants discovery,he's wanted for murder so she hides him. but because of that message ,the other servant found out, from Robby, the governor gets suspicious and have the police investigated. she hides him in another part of the place so the police won't find him. They start having a affair , as she tries to find his innocents and get him out of the country. The Govenor some how finds out about him and captures him behind Arrabellas back. As shes trying to find out from the Governor the situation without him suspecting her involved in the hiding But some how He's found innocent or the charges are dropped and he leaves back to Germany ending the affair with Arrabella. This is a Good melodramatic love story although they didn't sync in the soundtrack the "olé ! olé ! sounds during the bull fight scenes for what ever reason. There is a dance number that the dancers also sing the title of the movie. Zara's night clubs are always mini theaters with vaudeville acts or so it seems but this is a good movie.

Review :

Now I understand why the Nouvelle Vague was so necessary.

I waited a long time to see this adaptation of Zola's famous novel but was really disappointed by the slow pace, the stilted dialogue (badly subtitled as well, in the VHS tape I saw) and the unimaginative camera work. It's pretty clear that this is precisely the type of post-WWII studio film against which Truffaut and Godard rebelled. And thank God they did, because their work is so much more interesting than period potboilers like this one. Martine Carol is vivacious and charming, but with limited acting ability. To be fair, "Nana" is the type of actress who is renowned for her fabulous body and her bold display thereof, rather than for any kind of musical or dramatic skills. (Sound familiar, Hollywood?) Also, as a plus, the film is very frank about how Nana earns a living outside of her stage appearances, and how her entourage skims off her fees by providing either information or access. I found this candor refreshing since most Hollywood movies of this era are very coy about whoring. Think about the presentation of Jo Van Fleet in "East of Eden," for example. Charles Boyer plays the male lead here, a hypocritical aristocrat in the Emperor's employ, but it's an unsatisfying part. It's all about "Nana," and in the end, being the selfish little baggage she is, she would prefer it that way.

Lovely to Look At and Listen To

While I have to agree with many of the points made in the preceding reviews (and I'm surprised there are so many) no one has pointed out one of the main attractions of LOVELY TO LOOK AT; it is simply one of the most beautiful Technicolor films ever made.

Once upon a pre-home-video time this was one of the legendary vanished films of my youth. So (some years ago) I jumped at the chance to see a rare revival of it at the late, much lamented Regency in New York when it was screened as part of a Jerome Kern film retrospective.

The Regency must have unearthed an original Technicolor print because the film was even more stunning visually than I remembered. The deep blues in the Champions' "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" number, the infernal reds in their "Yesterdays" sequence in the fashion show, the misty pastels in Keel and Grayson's dawn ride in the Bois de Bologna, the gilded primitif look of Miller's "Hard To Handle" nightclub act…..

These are among the most stunning Technicolor sequences ever shot.

MGM Technicolor seemed to peak in the late 40s and early 50s (prior, I might add to the industry-wide conversion to inferior but cheaper Eastman color). MGM films such as HOLIDAY IN Mexico (1946) and THE PIRATE (1948) through LOVELY and SCARAMOUCHE (both 1952) brought the art of color cinematography to a peak it was never to equal again.

Musically LOVELY is stunning too, with it vintage Jerome Kern score, beautifully arranged (mostly) by Leo Arnaud. The modernistic, sometimes jazz-tinged orchestrations are brilliant, especially in the fashion show instrumentals. (Listen again to the "Yesterdays" arrangement here, if the smoldering reds behind the Champions do not blow you away).

And Kathryn Grayson's rendition of the classic "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is one of the highlights of her career.

Rhino recently released the full soundtrack in stereo, a CD worth pursuing for those with an interest in vintage musicals and arrangements.

Both musically and visually LOVELY TO LOOK AT defines'50s Populuxe. It will take a super DVD release to reveal both the visual and aural riches of this flawed under-rated classic.

Grayson and Keel allegedly both loathed this film, but everyone in it is also at their peak of '50s attractiveness. The plot is secondary, and there are emphatic lapses such as Red Skelton's routine about mid-film when director Mervyn Leroy, in a rather shocking sequence for MGM, apparently just let the camera roll because Skelton was on one.

The Tuesday matinée series at the Los Angeles Museum of Art has LOVELY TO LOOK AT scheduled for screening in Dec. By fortuitous coincidence one of the most gorgeous Technicolor musicals is followed (the next week) by one of the most beautiful BxW musicals ever made, Lubitch's 193 THE MERRY WIDOW.

I only hope LACMA gets a print comparable to the one I saw at the Regency in New York so many moons ago! (Did anyone mention Vincente Minnelli guest-directed the fashion show finale?)

Rather Simple Story With Effective Moments

THE PURPLE PLAIN is a British war film which means it`s rather understated when compared to its American counterparts . There`s not a massive budget involved which means little in the way of spectacle and if truth be told the special effects involving a RAF fighter-bomber coming under attack from Japanese flak is somewhat unconvincing . It also contains a few too many stiff upper lipped chaps

I do give credit to the movie for bringing some type of psycological thought to the story though . The movie revolves around Canadian RAF pilot Squadron Leader Bill Forrester who is a suprisingly complex character for this type of movie . Forrester is a man who knows what grief is and it threatens to tear him apart . However the complexities and characteristics of Forrester soon become pushed into the background as the story concentrates on the adventure antics of the hero trying to escape from behind enemy lines

THE PURPLE PLAIN isn`t a movie that`s dated well . No doubt when it was released in the mid 1950s audiences ( Especially those who crewed an aircraft or fought in the Far East ) could relate to it more but it seems slightly cliched now . But like I said it does try to be a character study instead of a straight forward war movie and it does contain some effective moments

I'm from Socorro! Never knew it was in a movie!

I just saw this movie last night as I was channel surfing. I of course watched it as it is set in my quaint little city of Socorro, NM, right on the Rio Grande. I'd like to find out where it was filmed. Just made me even more homesick, as I work in Washington, DC and miss the quiet peacefulness of Socorro. Was a pretty good movie too. As far as westerns go, it is no "Big Jake" (though the director of this movie actually teamed with John Wayne to direct Big Jake") or Silverado, but I did find it an easy watch. Predictable, but when you've seen as many movies as I, not much surprises me, unless the writing is just down right amazing. Again, just amazed that my little seemingly insignificant hometown was ever featured or mentioned in a movie.

It's no lie

This film's Italian title is "The Most Beautiful Woman In The World", and with that 10 inch waist of hers, Gina Lollobrigida is easily the prima of the world's prime donne. If you want to mix bellezza with your opera, you can't go wrong here.

Excellent mystery

I saw this movie in 1954 at a theatre in West Phila where it played continuously for almost six months, an indicator of its popularity. Recalling the movie these many years later, I can nevertheless state that it was a mystery, wonderfully acted, especially by Kiernan Moore. he plot had so many twists that you were cosntantly guessing and yet still astonished at the amazing ending. Why this movie disappeared so soon and why it isn't on video nonpluses me.

Family Business

Following a news report that a fabulous jewel collection, called "Unclaimed Cargo", will be on display at the Waldorf Jewelry Company, a city alderman and secret underworld gang leader, Nick Petzik (Peter Brocco), plans a gigantic jewel robbery. To ensure the success of his scheme, Petzik chooses three of his most capable men for the job; "Dutch" Bender (John Doucette), "Slats" Hylan (Richard Irving), and Kirsten, a crooked official of the jewel company. Petzik intends to sell the jewels back to Waldorf's insurance company; and to force the insurance company to play ball with him, Petzik enlists the aid of Gino Morello (Richard Benedict), a young and reckless Italian boy, whose brother Phil(Rick Vallin)is the lawyer for the insurance company. Petzik is sure that once the 3-billed Phil learns that his 4th-Billed brother is one of the thieves, he will do business with the gang without asking any questions.

But...Anna Reichardt (Penny Edwards), a charming Austrian girl who---with her aunt Maria---runs a pastry shop on the ground floor of the Morello apartment building...is a witness to the robbery and spots Gino as one of the robbers.

Then it gets complicated...and messy. Barbara Billingsley is a socialite engaged to Phil, who is the nominal action hero in this one, because Ross Elliott, who should have been, plays the Priest brother of Phil and Gino, and only provides lectures. This means of course, Penny Edwards has to end up in somebody's arms, and Rick Vallin is the only qualified Morello brother. And he has to suddenly break his engagement to the surprised Barbara Billingsley right before THE END, in order for Penny Edwards to have somebody to kiss before THE END.

First-ever Mexican movie about UFOs

This is a pretty obscure Mexican comedy which now seems to be a lost movie. It is mentioned as the first-ever Mexican movie about UFOs. I happen to have a Mexican lobby card of it. The illustrations and the one still, featuring a female alien and a robot, on that card, make me think that it might have been partially influenced from the British-made DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS from 1954. Web searches on Spanish-language sites come up with almost nothing. The only bit of information that I could find on this movies is that it was about a guy and his girlfriend pretending to come from outer space. If that plot synopsis is correct, then the movie would be a parody.
