Not a war but a soldiers movie

Everyone that expects a war movie like "The Bridge" or "The longest day" will probably be quite disappointed after seeing this movie. However, I never found a movie which captures the atmosphere of a soldiers life and problems better than 08/15.

This is not a film that focuses on historical battles or dramatic highlights in WW2, but rather on a common soldiers life and his chaotic way through the war.

Even during the second episode, which plays at the ostfront its never the war which the main focus is on but the ordinary soldiers and their interactions.

Lively, physically beautiful, with delightful comedy and John Rich's script

Young Piper Laurie and handsome newcomer Rock Hudson were both featured to great advantage in this clearly-plotted and lively adventure-comedy. Imaginative veteran Nathan Juran directs very accurately and imaginatively, and the acting by George Macready as the ambitious villain, aided by Gene Evans (not quite up to a classical accent) and Kathleen Hughes and that of their opponents played by Edgar Barrier, the crafty Stephen Geray and others is above average for any genre. Adding to the fun is lovely Laurie impersonating a boy, a mysterious magic sword (which in lesser hands would have been a detriment) and its magical unwillingness to obey other than a virtuous owner. There is a prolonged sequence when various magicians attempt to remove the sword--which Macready needs to claim the throne--that has become embedded in a wall, and more physically colorful and beautifully-realized scenes than in any ten mean-streets melodramas of the post 1970s. If you do not fall in love with the spirited Khairozan, as Hudson does in the film, then you are probably dead. If you cannot delight in this youthful and stirring adventure of a bygone era, you had best give Grecianized Near-Easterns, our richest adventure genre in so many ways, a consistent miss.

Lost in an era of innocence with the delightful Miss K!

A young married couple, Peter (Brian Reece) and Barbara (June Thorburn) are taking the train to visit friends in the English countryside for the weekend. Leaving Barbara in the train on the platform Peter pops out to buy a newspaper, meeting old "friend" Carol (Kay Kendall) at the news stand. Naturally the train leaves while they're still catching up! Peter takes Carol back to his apartment, and dubious family maid Rawlings (Dora Bryan), while arranging a car to take them to the country. By now Barbara has contacted her parents, formidable Mrs. Crabb (Fabia Drake) and tippler Mr. Crabb (Stanley Holloway), with the news that Peter has "run off" with another woman. Their suspicions confirmed by Rawlings they set off in pursuit. Unfortunately Peter and Carol have been stranded with a broken car and take shelter in a small inn ran by Gladys (Vida Hope). Needless to say there is only one bedroom available and needless to say Gladys has strong religious principles against unmarried cohabitation! Signing the register, as a married couple, Peter and Carol have a close call with the passing Reverend Tripp-Johnson (Reginald Beckwith), who married family friend Carol but can't quite remember her husband. Peter spends a restless night trying to find somewhere to sleep, under the suspicious eye of Gladys, and to sneak Carol's dog in from the rainy barn. As to be expected Barbara and her parents arrive, followed closely by the Reverend and ultimately Carol's husband, Member of Parliament Claude (Alexander Gauge). Someone once said that English comedy is the "comedy of embarrassment" and this is shown in the subsequent interactions.

I have always been enjoyed British comedies from the 40s to the early 60s. They benefit from the fantastic array of British character actors, a more literate or at least verbal comedy than their American cousins and an air of innocence long lost. This film has all three. Brian Reece is a bit "wet" for my taste but all other actors are strong. The key attraction is the sadly missed Kay Kendell. At the end, as Carol's husband is bombarded by accusations from Mrs. Crabb against her and Peter, she simply wraps her husband around her finger with wit and charm. Its amazing that people not even born when she died are grandparents. However her charm, style, wit and knowing look are more "modern" then ever.

A classic moral drama, high-lighted by fine performances and the unforgettable "Unchained Melody"

Long before Whoopi and Swayze, even before the Righteous Brothers, came this dandy little low budget tale of the men's prison at Chino, California. The drama centers on the division of one man's soul...part of him wants to continue his criminal ways, and attempt escape, while the other half wants to get home to his wife and family. Former sports great Hirsch turns in a surprising inspired performance, and Hale and Morris prove up to their respective tasks. And of course, the haunting "Unchained Melody" is enough to make you want to watch it over and over.

Rex and Slim versus the Timber Barons

Siblings Carrie and Daniel Hurley are trying to start up their timber mill by trying to have all the trees in the valley chopped despite the fact the forest rangers saying it will hurt the ranchers by exposing the land to erosion and flash floods. They also inherit a ranch with timber that can be cut down, but find themselves coheirs with Jacqueline Reynolds, arriving from the east, and Slim Pickens, coming from Texas with his ranch foreman Rex Allen. The Hurleys try to buy out Jacqueline and Slim's portions of the ranch claiming that the trees are infected with a blight and must be cut down, which will ruin the property, but Rex and Mattie, Jacqueline's maid, go stop them from signing the document. The Hurley's next plan is to have their younger brother, Dusty (a black sheep even for this family) impersonate a forestry official (using the documents of an official poisoned by the Hurleys) to order the trees cut down. Rex writes the forestry department for advice on the matter, and his letter is stolen by Dusty, who takes it back to Carrie, who poisons him to prevent him from telling Rex of their scheme. The Hurleys accuse Rex of Dusty's murder, but he is called to prevent rains from flooding the valley. Excellent entry in the Rex Allen series with plenty of action and great direction from director Witney. The script could have used some work in the beginning since the Hurley's motives at the beginning (before they inherit the ranch) aren't clearly explained. The film has a bunch of great fights including Rex vs. Graham (Daniel Hurley) started by Rex throwing a punch while riding past him on Koko. Pickens and Beavers (Mattie) both give good comic relief performances here. An all around winner. Rating, based on B westerns, 10.

Shepperton's Tricksy Trio.

Eamonn Andrews is the link man for two tales of supernatural suspense and one murder mystery.

In the first segment, titled In The Picture, an art gallery guide is lured into a macabre house painting by the artist and finds himself at the mercy of the residents who dwell there. In the second segment, titled You Killed Elizabeth, two friends fall in love with the same woman and when she is murdered it's obvious one of them did it. But which one? The final segment, titled Lord Mountdrago, The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs ruins the career of an opponent in Parliament and finds the man appearing in his dreams enacting retribution.

As is always the case with anthologies, the quality of stories is mixed, with here the middle section being the one that is pretty standard fare. No such problem with the other two stories though.

The first one is very creepy, even bordering on the terrifying as the tale reaches its conclusion. Once the story reaches the insides of the house in the painting, we are treated to a trio of odd characters living in a house that instantly conjures up images of horror. Ramshackle and creaky, director Wendy Toye further enhances the discord by using canted angles and personalised framing. An excellent story. Starring Hugh Pryse, Alan Badel and Eddie Byrne.

The third tale is considerably boosted by Orson Welles giving bluster to the story written by W. Somerset Maugham. Not without genuine moments of humour, it never reaches scary heights but always it feels off-kilter, the revenge dream attack angle devilish and the production has good quality about it. Very good. Alan Badel co-stars and although the three stories are not related, he is the constant actor in all three. Grand old British trilogy. 8/10

"Mystery Lake" the mystery film

Mystery Lake, a script set at the northwest Tennessee geological oddity Reelfoot Lake, was cut by Disney partially using film from a silent nature picture, "Earthquake Lake," shot by wildlife photographer Karl Mazlowski. Mazlowski filmed at the lake during the mid and late 1940s. His footage was chiefly treatments of birds animals which inhabit the lake, much like the narrated nature shows Disney produced for years. The death of the lecture-circuit film ended his hopes of travelling with his picture and most prints of the film was sold to Walt Disney, who was interested in the footage it for their own "Mystery Lake" film project. After a very short, very limited theater run through Disney's distributor, Buena Vista, the film was re-cut and shown as a serial feature on the Mickey Mouse Club television program. A print of the full feature is said to reside in the Disney vault, but the film has not been seen or re-released since 1953. Mazlowski retained a print of his original "Earthquake Lake" lecture film and made a DVD copy available in the interest of preservation and for public and scholarly use at the Univ. of Tennessee at Martin in 2004.

An interesting Cold War gangster film that is VERY low on energy

This is an odd little relic from the 1950s. While there were quite a few gangster films made at the time as well as anti-Communism thrillers (such as MY SON, JOHN and I MARRIED A COMMUNIST), this is the only film I can think of that merges the two genres! In a highly unusual move, the Communists enlist the aid of a deported American gangster (George Raft) to orchestrate the kidnapping of a nuclear scientist. This makes the film's concept rather interesting, but the film itself is hampered by low-energy performances (particularly Edward G. Robinson and Raft to a lesser extent) and poor casting (almost none of the people spoke with French-Canadian accents despite the film supposedly taking place in Montreal). In fact, Robinson sounded pretty much like he was on sedatives! Perhaps the reason for this muted performance was just because this excellent actor was so badly miscast. As a result, it is STILL watchable but also quite skip-able as well.

Great Actors & Director!

This film only captures the audience because of Grace Kelly (Catherine Knowland),"The Swan",'56, who is very charming and magnetic through out the entire picture and is well matched with actor Stewart Granger,(Rian X Mitchell),"King Solomon's Mines",'50, these two great actors make this a classic film because of their great talents. Paul Douglas(Vic Leonard),"The Maggie",'54 gave a very interesting and supportive role. Not as good as The Jolson Story, but a very entertaining musical bio.

While this film is not as good as The Jolson Story, it is nevertheless very entertaining. Eddie Cantor dubbed the songs for Keefe Brasselle, and it is Cantor's great voice and the exciting songs that make the movie. Songs like Ida, Sweet As Apple Cider, If You Knew Susie, Potatos Are Cheaper, Margie, and I'd Like To Spend each Sunday With You are just great. Brasselle has taken criticism for his portrayal of Cantor, but he really does a pretty good job. Parks was better in the Jolson bio, but in fact, Brasselle resembled Cantor in appearance more than Parks resembled Jolson.

The Stage

The story of the Booth family of actors with the heavy drinking and mad father, Junius Brutus, played by Raymond Massey who is accompanied on his tours out west to the mining camps by son Edwin, a child actor who morphs into Richard Burton), while John Wilkes (John Derek) hones his acting skills and soaks up secessionist fervor in the South. The various stages are set for the young actors, with John Wilkes choosing to act on a bigger stage, as he says to his brother in one scene. The movie focuses on Edwin played by Richard Burton who takes over the Shakespeare roles his father leaves behind when he (the father) cannot carry on any longer. The big dramatic question is if Edwin will follow in his father's footsteps. Who rescues him from the same fate of his father but the beautiful Juliet to his Romeo played by Maggie MacNamara. It may seem a little contrived, but actually the film captures the times really well, portraying the pivotal roles of the theater, the stage, and the actors.

John Payne, accused of murder and robbery, finds the whole town turned against him and pursuing him around town

Dan Duryea, with badge and warrant, comes to Silver Lode on John Payne's wedding day. His marriage to fetching and loyal Lizabeth Scott, who never looked better, is rudely interrupted by vengeful Duryea who doesn't act like a lawman. At first the townspeople are supportive of Payne but as events snowball they end up pursuing him all over the place.

This is a fast-moving, athletic, exciting western with overtones of High Noon. Cinematographer John Alton has some wonderful shots. Director Allan Dwan packs lots of action into its 77 minutes.

Dolores Moran, the helpful saloon girl, has plenty of punchy lines and delivers them with panache.

Folks, they don't make them like this anymore, and they never will again. You can create new works of art, but you cannot possibly bring together the kinds of acting, writing, directing and all the rest that go into a movie like this. The supporting cast, for example, includes Morris Ankrum, Stuart Whitmore, Emile Meyer, suave Edgar Barrier, Harry Carey, Jr., and Robert Warwick.

Nora, an intrepid newspaper reporter eager for a juicy story, answers a mysterious "lonely hearts" ad and finds a brilliant but hideously disfigured plastic surgeon who only wants to be loved. Nora's sympathetic (if slightly repulsed) and the doctor seemingly gets his wish but when he finds out what she does for a living and what she may be up to, he resuscitates the handsome corpse of a presidential candidate to wreak a fiendishly ironic vengeance on Nora...

Director Chano Urueta (who seemed to have a knack for this sort of thing) takes a tip from Universal horror films of the 1940s by using an Eastern European village, a foreboding castle high above the sea, a mad scientist's lab, a wax museum, and a spooky cemetery with lots of fog to set the story. There's also a hairy sub-human in the dungeon who's transformed into a handsome instrument for revenge and the mad scientist, a lovelorn freak reminiscent of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in both looks and temperament, is got up to look like Claude Rains in THE INVISIBLE MAN with a black cape, panama hat, and a mean bullwhip which he uses to keep his creations in line. There's lots of black & white atmospherics and a couple of Ripper-like murders to propel this off-the-wall horror movie-cum-romantic melodrama and it's all taken quite seriously which only adds to the charm. Nora's played by the beautiful Prague-born Miroslava who made a name for herself in Mexican film (working for Robert Rossen, Jacques Tourneur, and Luis Buñuel, among others) before killing herself in 1955 when her bullfighter lover left her for Ava Gardner. My DVD-R is dubbed in Italian (where it was released as THE MONSTROUS DR. CRIMEN) and subtitled in English (!)

Outrageous, funny, and imaginative

I've never seen a Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis movie. This was my first and I hope it is not my last! With a wacky story line (Crazy-for-comic boy Eugene dreams up comic book stories with Vincent Vulture and Freddie Fieldmouse and his friend writes them down) and a ton of laughs ("Not only will I watch your switchboard but I'll buzz your lights and tangle your wires. Come 'ere baby." "Not while your friend's watching." "Oh, he left." "Wow! Then what are we waiting for? My saggitarius was right. Come on, boy. Don't fight.") And the cutest actors (Shirley MacLaine, Dorothy Malone). How can you not love the songs? And then there's the entire Eva Gabor thing going on. This movie is hilarious, too bad it's not popular NOW. I highly recommend it. I love it.
